To get a better understanding of the
scope of hunger in the United States, America's Second Harvest once
again organized a national study in 2005.
The study was conducted
throughout the nation by more than 150 food banks.
Mid-Ohio Foodbank collected data from our network of
agencies in twenty counties and interviewed 400 clients receiving food.
Battelle sponsored our part of the study in central and eastern Ohio.
Their $25,000.00 sponsorship covered expenses including participation
fees, personnel costs, and the publication of the findings. |

- Mid-Ohio Foodbank provides emergency assistance
for more than 193,000 people per year - a 44% increase since the
study in 2001.
- 28% of interviewed adults report that someone in
their household is in poor health.
- The average monthly income of client households
is only $ 720.00.
- 44% of clients have had to choose between food
and paying for utilities.
- 29% have chosen between food and rent.
- 25% have chosen between food and medical care.
- One third of the households served have at least
one person employed, but earn too little to get by without
assistance.
- In two-thirds of households, the major source of
income is a job or social security or disability benefits.
Less than 2% report that government welfare is the major source of
their income.
- Nearly 70% of emergency feeding agencies are
faith based charities, including churches, synagogues, mosques, or
other religious institutions.
- 93% of pantries in our area benefit from the hard
work of volunteers. 69% of them are run entirely by
volunteers.
