Eight Year Old Helps Out

Thank you Wesley for your outstanding donation! The spirit of giving runs pretty strong in many kids these days, and we met one boy recently who came up with a great way to help out folks in need.

When his mom decided to have a garage sale, eight year old Wesley pitched in to help.  He brought out lots of his old toys and sold them himself.  He wanted the proceeds to provide food for kids in need, and he put out a sign letting all his customers know that his proceeds would benefit Mid-Ohio Foodbank.

Many sales and donations later, Wesley raised $65!  He and his mom came to the Foodbank to make his donation and see just how much Wesley's generous efforts will help other kids.  He was excited to hear that every $1 donated will provide $8 worth of groceries for families in need.

Ohio Senator Sherrod Brown Visits Mid-Ohio Foodbank

(from left) Ohio Senator Sherrod Brown with Matt Habash, president and CEO of Mid-Ohio Foodbank. In a March 19 visit to Mid-Ohio Foodbank, Ohio Senator Sherrod Brown announced that he has sponsored an amendment to the Senate budget bill that provides $40 million for The Emergency Food Assistance Program (TEFAP) to help foodbanks across the country cope with huge loses in commodities supplied by federal food programs.

Brown has been working to secure the funding for TEFAP to address the food bank crisis until a permanent fix can be passed in the Farm Bill.  “Negotiators are continuing to work through House and Senate versions of the Farm Bill to reconcile differences and to settle on a measure that will gain President Bush’s support,” said Senator Brown.

Matt Habash, president and CEO of Mid-Ohio Foodbank, said, “The decrease in food from the federal government has left a huge hole in our supply.  We’ve seen a 32 percent decrease in the last three years—over 2.9 million pounds. Getting additional USDA commodities into our system is critical if food pantries are to have well-stocked shelves with sufficient staples for the increasing number of families they are helping.”

“The wealthiest nation in the world cannot allow its people to go hungry,” said Brown. “Working Americans who cannot afford to adequately feed their families, elderly individuals who worked hard all their lives but cannot survive on Social Security—they deserve to be a priority.”
